This was a really exciting shoot. I got hired by Justin to capture his proposal to his beautiful girlfriend, Robyn. It took place at Phara’s, a delicious Mediterranean restaurant, where they had their first date. I pretended to be a normal diner, and wore a wig. Just kidding about the wig, but it did feel very secret detective-like, except instead of trying to catch something nefarious, I was hoping to catch a beautiful and happy moment. It was such a honor to be there, and the fellow diners at Phara’s were pretty stoked too!

Jen and Matt is a super awesome couple, and so far had the best exit I’ve ever seen at a wedding. Towards the end of the dancing, Matt confessed to Jen that he had a secret to share. Then he ripped his tux opened to reveal that he was a super hero: The Super Boyfriend. And he gave a cape to Jen. Then Super Boyfriend and Super Girlfriend went up, up and away to their last journey together, before settling in as man and wife.

This year I had the honor of being one of the visual artists for the Califa Arts Collaborative. I really love dance, and it was great to have my photography be part of the dancing. I worked with the choreographer Jen Hart, who came up with the concept: “Seven Stories”, a story about journeys. I photographed the dancers either just being in the moment and present, or dancing out a gesture that they think represent themselves. The photographs become the backdrop of the dancing.

Here are some photos from it:

This session was an extra special one for me, and I’m glad I got permission to tell their story. Marygrace was a classmate at Ballet Austin, where I was always impressed by her persistence and unflagging enthusiasm for dance. One day in class, I found out that she was engaged and moving to Toronto! It turns out that Greg, whom she last talked to 17 years ago, contacted her on Facebook. They added each other and before long were constantly on the phone.

Marygrace said, “After my first marriage, and at my age, I wasn’t really actively looking.” She is in her fifties and not shy about it.

I asked her about Greg and she said, “Greg was married, and his wife got really sick. He took care of her the last few years of her life. I said to him that it was sad that he had to go through that so young, but Greg replied, ‘I’m glad I was young, because I had the strength to take care of her’.”

When Marygrace heard this, she knew that she found the right man.

Here they are, a few weeks after they got married. Several times during the portrait session they were so tender with each other it was breathtaking.
